Harpers' Gathering host, Barbara Karlik

Join us ONLINE, Sunday 20 September, 4–6 pm, Irish time for our Harpers' Gathering community social time, hosted by HHSI volunteer, Barbara Karlik. Come and enjoy harp-related talk, share your projects and progress, and try out tunes you want to play in front of a small, very supportive audience. From 5 pm, enjoy an informal interview with this month's guest, historical harpist Thomas Zapf.

From an early age, Thomas was fascinated by the tonal qualities of historical instruments spanning from antiquity to the late Baroque — many of which he mastered primarily through self-study. Today, he specializes in the full spectrum of European historical harps, ranging from single-row harps of the Romanesque period to the triple harps of the High Baroque.

A particular focus throughout has been the Gaelic wire-strung harp—with its captivating sound and complex playing technique—as well as the adaptation of this technique (specifically its emphasis on string damping) to other types of historical harps. In recent years, Thomas has collaborated with harp maker Burkard 'Buxe' Kleiner in reconstructions and reinterpretations of chromatic wire-strung harps.
