Dr Matthew Spring
Matthew read music and history at Keele University and at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he completed a doctorate on the Lute, and went on to study early music at the Royal College of Music. Matthew became a Reader in Music at Bath Spa University in 2013 and is now Visiting Research Fellow. He performs with several Early Music ensembles. His book The Lute in Britain, A History of the Lute and its Music, Oxford Early Music Series (Oxford, OUP, 2001) was the Winner of the Bessaraboff Prize for best book on instruments published in 2000/01, given by The American Musical Instrument Society 2002. In 2010 Matthew produced his edition of the Balcarres Manuscript (AHRC award) for Edinburgh and Glasgow University Press and has written a number of articles on Scottish Lute Music.
