Dr Matthew Spring
Matthew read music and history at Keele University and at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he completed a doctorate on the Lute, and went on to study early music at the Royal College of Music. Matthew became a Reader in Music at Bath Spa University in 2013 and is now Visiting Research Fellow. He performs with several Early Music ensembles and has made over recordings r. His book The Lute in Britain, A History of the Lute and its Music, Oxford Early Music Series (Oxford, OUP, 2001) was the Winner of the Bessaraboff Prize for best book on instruments published in 2000/01, given by The American Musical Instrument Society 2002. In 2010 Matthew produced his edition of the Balcarres Manuscript (AHRC award) for Edinburgh and Glasgow University Press and has written a number of articles on Scottish Lute Music.
